Glasgow unveils market refit

Glasgow wholesale market has unveiled the results of its extensive refurbishment project.

The Blochairn Road site has undergone an 18 month process to modernise including insulating the market and making the trading hall brighter.

The process was completed after trading hours as contractor City Building (Glasgow) LLP clad the outside of the building during the day.

City Markets (Glasgow) LLP managing director Graham Wallace went on global fact-finding missions as president of the World Union of Wholesale Markets and introduced a number of innovations including energy efficient lighting which complements the produce and a new, non-slip resin floor that replaced the previous polished concrete flooring.

Wallace explained: “Instead of being a dingy market it’s a bright, vibrant environment to work in.”

During the cladding process, a number of traders took the opportunity to re-fit and modernise their company’s offices.

“The idea was to show the tenants that we have started the shell and it looks good to encourage investment in their own units,” Wallace added.

Gerry Price, regional director for Total Produce, said: “The look of the market is a lot better than it has been, it’s a pleasant environment and, considering the economic environment, it’s a big step forward.”

The market now has a new distribution board for its electricity, new signage and has been re-painted.

The next stage is to relocate the fish market into a wing of the main market. Proposals are to be finalised before March.
