GlobalGAP has expanded to reach more than 100,000 producers worldwide, the certification body announced this week. Fruit and vegetables still represents the majority of those certified either directly to GlobalGAP or a GlobalGAP benchmarked standard, however the numbers for fresh-cut flowers and other ornamentals growers are also increasing.

Almost half of all those certified are based in southern Europe: 19,301 in Italy, 19.184 in Spain and 11,817 in Greece.

Meanwhile, the GlobalGAP product list now contains 300 products. The products that are most certified are apples which are grown on 20,896 certified farms, followed by potatoes on 9,249 holding and cherries on 7,558 farms.

Worldwide expansion remains stable and there were only slight increases in numbers in those countries where GlobalGAP is well established. Europe still accounts for 80 per cent of the 100,000 producers although there was a slightly greater increase compared to other continents in Africa and in North America.

Roughly two-thirds of producers are certified as groups and the remaining third as individuals.
