Tesco celebrated its inaugural Supplier & Grower Awards in London on November 20.

In all, 26 awards were given. Greenvale AP’s John Rix was named vegetable grower of the year, The Greenery’s Nigel Bartle won the title for salad and Norman Collett’s Alan Firman was the fruit winner.

Branston was honoured as vegetable supplier of the year, A Gomez for salads, Glinwell for organics and Grapes Direct for fruit.

Best variety went to Greenvale AP’s Vales Sovereign, farming innovation of the year to Humber VHB for its herb growing and Flamingo’s Homegrown Kenya got the community award.

BerryWorld’s Adrian Olins was named young professional of the year, while G’s Marketing took the prize for local grower of the year.

But the ultimate winners on the night were Tesco grower of the year Nigel Bartle and supplier of the year A Gomez.

Tesco also honoured overseas growers, with South Africa’s Karsten Farms winning southern hemisphere international grower and Co-op Granfrutta Zani from Italy taking the northern hemisphere title.

Buyer Jonathan Corbett said: “The event was used to celebrate the success and contribution of the growers and suppliers to the Tesco business throughout 2008. The awards recognised and honoured those exceptional individuals and teams who together have contributed to the growth and development of our business worldwide in the last 12 months. The gathering brought together our suppliers and growers from all four corners of the world, to receive their accolades in the presence of their peers.”
