Hargreaves's new Huntingdon nursery

Hargreaves Plants has bought a nursery in East Anglia for an undisclosed sum as it seeks to expand its soft-fruit plant business.

Ornamentals nursery RA Meredith & Son confirmed the sale of its Huntingdon site to Hargreaves following a corporate review. The Gloucestershire firm decided to “rationalise operations to improve the business’s geographical efficiency,” a statement from the firm said.

Commenting on the purchase Rupert Hargreaves of Hargreaves Plants said: “ This a great strategic move for our soft-fruit plant business where we are expanding our market share significantly.

“The 18-acre Huntingdon nursery will allow us to take full advantage of our products and the marketplace. We will now have the facilities to offer our customers a product that will be unequalled in our sector of the market.”

Hargreaves will be growing a full range of soft-fruit plants at its new site which already has substantial area under glass. “It is all in very good order and fully automated,” said Hargreaves. “It is a terrific young-plants nursery and will be good for us to grow our business.”

RA Meredith & Son said the sale is the first of a number of moves it is taking to counter the rising costs that all growers are facing in the ornamental horticultural industry.
