The owner of suppliers Hazeldene and Parripak has won gold in the Good Employer category of this year’s Food and Drink Federation Awards.

William Jackson Food Group, which owns Aunt Bessie’s, Jackson’s Bakery, salad processor Hazeldene Foods and vegetable processor Parripak Foods, attended an awards ceremony in London on Wednesday alongside brands such as Nestle, Coca-Cola and Kraft.

The company has developed a range of activities for employees including an employee volunteering programme which offers all employees the opportunity to spend a day volunteering with a number of external partners while still being paid.

This programme is managed by the workforce rather than the senior management team and is beneficial to employees and the chosen charities.

Nicholas Oughtred, chairman of The Hull-based family business, said: “People are at the heart of everything we do. This was the case when my great, great grandfather started the business in Hull 160 years ago and is still the case today. We’re very proud to receive this award in recognition of our Employee Engagement Initiative which looks at helping all of our colleagues both on a business and personal level.”

He added: “A key element of the WJFG initiative is its employee engagement survey which is managed by external specialists and totally confidential. The survey gives colleagues the opportunity to tell us how they feel about working for the group and we try our best to address any issues which arise.
