Growers are set to receive a boost, according to market analyst Datamonitor, as consumers opt for more healthy snack foods.

However, some consumers see healthy food as ‘inconvenient and lacking in indulgent qualities’, and the desire to make compromises between these two needs is leading to an increasing demand for healthy food in the form of snacks.

Over 20 percent of participants in the survey said they sough healthy options when it comes to snacking - but the report added that manufacturers will need to ‘work hard’ when it comes to building trust between themselves and the consumer with regards to how ‘healthy’ their products really are.

The report added that snack foods and beverages sit ‘uncomfortably’ with the trend for health and wellness, despite snacking remaining an ‘important part of daily eating and drinking behaviour’.

“Although healthy products remain a small percentage of overall indulgent snack releases, the indication is that a growing number of consumers wish to snack indulgently, but in a “guilt-free” manner”, said Richard Parker, the report’s author.
