Putman: new certification "good for business"

Fresh produce port handler MMD (Shipping Services) has achieved the renowned OHSAS 18001 international health and safety standard.

OHSAS, the Occupational Health & Safety Assessment Series, is awarded to companies that achieve high standards of risk management.

MMD operates port services at Portsmouth unloading and handling thousands of tonnes of fresh produce on a daily basis.

Martin Putman, port manager, said, “This new certificate means a lot to everyone at MMD. We know that by its very nature we have a fairly high-risk working environment, and have always taken safety seriously.”

Putman claims MMD is now one of the UK’s leading specialists in the importation of fruit and vegetables, handling the majority of all bananas that are eaten in the UK.

He added: “The OHSAS 18001 shows just how much work goes into preventing accidents, injury and ill health. It’s good for our staff and good for business, with everyone able to see the importance we place on operating in the safest possible way”.
