The HTA is launching a new initiative aimed at getting more women involved in horticulture.

The association is inviting applications for training grants for up to 40 women employed in the garden sector throughout England. The funding, which has been underwritten by Lantra, is aimed at developing opportunities for women of all levels in both the horticulture and landscape sectors.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for women within the sector to increase their knowledge and skills, giving them the opportunity to progress within the industry and I would encourage anyone to apply” said the HTA’s Penny Worner.

Each successful trainee will receive up to £650 towards training costs. Employers must make a financial contribution of £250 for the trainee to participate in the project and provide a mentor in the company to help and encourage the trainee. Trainees will also have an experienced mentor from outside the business who will be dedicated to supporting them with their training programme and achieving their goals.

A wide range of training may be accessed within the project including the HTA Training Awards (The Retail Plant Care Award, Retail Shop Care Award, Supervisory Award and Landscape Training Award). Training must be completed before April 2008.
