Ishida Europe introduced its first advanced X-ray inspection system into the UK for the first time.

The new model in the IX-GA range is the latest machine designed to detect foreign bodies including aluminium, tin, glass, stones, hard rubber and plastic.

The IX-GA uses self-learning Genetic Algorithm (GA) technology to offer maximum detection and reliability, according to Ishida product engineer Jim Bedford (pictured). The machine can detect objects down to 0.3mm in size and can also spot damaged products.

The machine can handle top-sealed and thermoformed trays and flexible bags, as well as unpacked product.

Bedford said: “X-ray inspection is better than standard metal detectors as it is able to identify foreign objects of any material, not just metal. This machine can be used by any food sector, and it has had a lot of interest at the show.”

The X-ray equipment, which has proved popular in Japan for 10 years, has also been launched in Europe.

Paul Griffin, Ishida Europe marketing director, said: “Today with increased awareness of food safety among consumers, manufacturers want maximum piece of mind, knowing that the products that leave their factories are totally safe.

“The IX-GA provides complete quality assurance for contamination, ensuring not only that the packs contain no foreign bodies, but also that the products themselves are not damaged.”
