Early Sweet

Israeli exporter Agrexco has announced the start of its grape campaign this week with first arrivals due in Europe on 25 May.

Liran Laffer, Agrexco product manager said: “We are starting with Early Sweet which now accounts for 90 per cent of our early season - our busiest weeks being at the start of June. Next to arrive will be Flame Seedless and Sugarone with Thompson and Crimson coming in towards the end of our season in August to September.”

Agrexco is planning to export around 1800 tonnes from Israel this season from mid-May to September.

Oded Yacovson, general manager Agrexco UK said grower numbers are increasing. “We actually had more growers joining us on the strength of our performance last year,” he said. “Then we successfully provided customers with fruit of a high brix level and good berry size during our short window between Chile and Egypt. This year, although Israeli growers are suffering 30 per cent less yield due to the weather conditions being unfavourable for grape cultivation, it has meant that the reduction in fruit on the vine has allowed for a higher sugar level and bigger berry size, both important factors in grape production.”
