The strike which saw 2,500 workers at ports in Israel walk out has ended after lengthy negotiations.

The stand-off between the Histadrut labour federation and the finance ministry concluded when a six per cent pay rise over two years.

“This is a fair agreement for both sides,” Histadrut negotiator Avi Nissenkoren said in an e-mailed statement.

Finance ministry spokesman Shlomi Shefer told Bloomberg that most employees will receive raises of three percent in both years of the new contract while the least senior members who were hired as late as 2005 will get an extra five percent over the two-year period creating a total 11 per cent raise.

Workers at the ports of Haifa, Ashdod and Eilat began the strike on Monday but large exporter Agrexco reported it had been given “exceptional approval” to continue as usual.

On Tuesday, 29 ships were left waiting outside the ports - 16 outside the port of Ashdod and 13 Haifa.
