Although Italian citrus production declined in 2000/01 due to summer drought, the decline was not as large as initially expected due to favourable weather during the winter. As a result, USDA forecasts have been revised upwards to 1.75m tonnes for oranges and 594,000t for tangerines. This follows a particularly difficult season in 1999/2000, in which record output left 13 per cent of oranges and seven per cent of tangerines unharvested. This also led to a 30 per cent reduction in fruit delivered to processors.
