Kanzi apples arrive in store

Kanzi apples have hit the shelves of three of the major UK supermarkets - Tesco, Waitrose and Sainsbury’s.

The apple has been voted best tasting apple at the Countryside Live Show, beating Jazz to first place.

The crop size of UK-grown Kanzi has increased by 40 per cent on last year’s harvest, beginning about 10 days earlier than previous seasons, with a total of 2,400 tonnes being harvested this season.

Adrian Scripps Ltd is working with 11 growers around the UK to produce the Kanzi apples. The companies supplies around 3,000 cartons per week to the three supermarkets and anticipate the figure to increase to 15,000 cartons over the new few weeks and even surpass this during peak season. The company also expects to supply into Marks & Spencer, Budgens, Morrisons and The Co-operative.

James Simpson, managing director of Adrian Scripps Ltd, told FPJ: ''Quality is generally very high with excellent sugars and texture this season. Probably the best flavour for several years and is eating exceptionally well straight off the tree.

"The apples are aimed to give the consumer something a bit special, but available every day. They are a premium apple but generally not the most expensive apple in the shop, they are in their prime from late October onwards.''
