Kendall unimpressed by lack of local strawberries

NFU president Peter Kendall has told Commercial Grower that he was not amused when he went to buy some home grown strawberries in his local town of Biggleswade last week.

“My wife occasionally sends me out to do the shopping,” Kendall recounted. “My neighbour, who normally provides our strawberries, had finished his production just before Wimbledon. So I went to the local Asda store in Biggleswade to buy some.

“To my absolute horror, the main strawberries they had came from the United States. To find them here on July 8 or 9 struck me as unbelievable.

“I haven’t had enough time to find out whether there had been something specifically wrong, like a shortage of pickers, or if there were any other reasons.”

“But surely to goodness if we can’t have our mainline strawberries in the middle of July in our retailers… if that is the best we can produce then the world must be going mad,” he added with some force.
