The board of Londis has unanimously agreed to put the corner shop chain up for auction.

In a statement the board has said it would follow KPMG’s recommendation to align the business with a third party.

Industry insiders have said bids for the group were lodged with KPMG last week, but no process for the sale has yet been agreed.

The Co-operative Group, Costcutter, Somerfield and Nisa-Today’s have all expressed an interest in Londis, although none would comment on their plans.

The Big Food Group, which has already made an indicative offer for Londis welcomed the board’s decision. Chief executive Bill Grimsey said: “We agree with the KPMG recommendation and look forward to demonstrating to the Londis board that the Big Food Group is the right strategic partner for Londis.”
