The Helsinki delegation visited New Covent Garden Market in Vauxhall

London’s wholesale markets are to influence a redevelopment of Helsinki’s largest market.

A delegation of Finnish market experts toured London last week to gather knowledge and information in how to revamp the 17 hectare Wholesale Food and Flower Market site in the country’s capital.

Representatives of the market authority and the Finnish Innovation Fund toured New Covent Garden and Borough markets, as well as the volunteer run The People’s Supermarket, on a fact-finding mission ahead of a retail re-work.

Helsinki market is to redevelop an old listed slaughterhouse into a new retail operation providing an outlet for 20 wholesalers and new retailers, to be completed in 2015.

Timo Taulavuori, managing director of Wholesale Food and Flower Market, told FPJ: “The market is 4km from the centre of Helsinki, has good metro links and is the area is being developed so there will be 20,000 people living there - we are in a strong position.

“The redevelopment at New Covent Garden is very interesting and I think there are some ideas there to use.”

The 120 companies at the market - 70 of the fresh produce firms - are also exploring the benefits of promoting local produce.
