Malling Juno delayed

The launch of a new early season summer fruiting raspberry variety has been delayed.

‘Malling Juno’, which was being developed by East Malling Research, has been delayed by marketing body Meiosis, because plant stocks are not ‘true to type’.

Although the research centre reports that in original trials, the new raspberry performed ‘very well’ and could be a potential replacement for Glen Moy, stocks held by plant propagators were found to be an ‘unknown’ crumbly-fruited variety which have had to be destroyed.

Meiosis conducted an investigation into the problem, and found that it had occurred during the initial phase of multiplication as a result of human error.

The company said it will credit growers who have been supplied with the wrong variety, and ensure that all efforts will be made to release true-to-type Malling Juno as soon as possible.
