Compassion in World Farming Trust (CIWF) has revealed results from a national opinion poll that show people who eat meat every day are more likely to consider themselves overweight, than those who eat meat once a week or less.

The results were announced at the launch of the Trust's Eat Less Meat Campaign. The campaign will be launched by Joanna Lumley, together with a host of experts, including environmentalist Jonathon Porritt.

The campaign brings together latest research showing that the global increase in meat consumption is having devastating effects on impoverished farmers in developing countries, the environment and global hunger.

Joyce D'Silva, CIWF Trust chief executive, said: "Our research makes it clear that obesity is linked to the alarming increase in adult-onset diabetes and heart disease. This new poll shows that high meat consumption is closely associated with increased body weight, rather than weight loss, as some fashionable diets imply."
