Nunhems was promoting its new non-drip watermelon, Selecta, to the foodservice sector at Fruit Logistica 2010.

The new watermelon can be easily processed as the flesh retains its juice even when cut. Its intense red colour is also retained after it has been prepared and it has the same sugar levels as a regular watermelon.

Nunhems’ Maria Jose Mari Tallada told freshinfo: “Selecta is a huge step forward for fresh-cut watermelon. It will be very important for growers and processors as less weight is lost in the preparation stage, which means more profit.”

Selecta was launched in 2009 and was eight years in the making. Jose Mari Tallada said that innovation has to continue through the recession. “We cannot ignore the economic crisis, but Nunhems has grown in 2009,” she added. “We have to struggle against it and have to innovate to be successful. We have to continue to come to market with innovative varieties.”
