Ocado has posted a year on year sales rise of 15.3 per cent in the 12 weeks to 21 February 2016.

The online grocery retailer, which specialises in organic produce, recorded of sales of £312.4 million in the period the data covers - up from £271.1m.

The number of average orders per week was up to 214,000, Ocado said, a rise of 16.9 per cent from the 12 weeks to 22 February 2015.

However, reflecting the current grocery economic climate, average basket spend was down 2.9 per cent to £111.41.

Tim Steiner, Ocado’s CEO, said:“We are pleased with the steady progress in our business, maintaining double digit sales growth in a retailenvironment that remains challenging, and post period end we shipped over 250,000 orders in a singleweek for the first time.

“We believe our focus on customer satisfaction and commitment to improving what we offer to consumersthrough innovation and our proprietary IP will support further growth. Notwithstanding the tough natureof the marketplace, we expect to continue growing ahead of the online grocery market.”

Meanwhile, Ocado - which was founded by three former Goldman Sachs bankers in 2000 -said it expected to renew a deal with Morrisons this year, even though its key customer recently reached a supply agreement with Amazon.

Morrisons is using Ocado to distribute its online products. Morrison's separate deal with Amazon is a wholesale agreement where Morrisons will supply Amazon with its products and Amazon will control how much it charges customers for them.
