Pembrokeshire spuds hit Asda

Pembrokeshire new potatoes hit the shelves in Asda last week.

The spuds, supplied by Puffin Produce, arrived in the Pembroke Dock store, not far from where they were grown, last Saturday.

The earliest new-season, field-grown Pembrokeshire new potatoes were hand-picked on the bank of the river Cleddau and transported by tractor and trailer to the store, just two and a half miles away.

Grower and Puffin Produce chairman Richard Hayman said: “These potatoes are the finest that Wales has to offer and those in the know believe they are the tastiest new potatoes.

“Pembrokeshire has an enviable heritage of producing some of the earliest, and finest, of all new potatoes. Our launch is aimed at letting those keen to get these potatoes onto their dinner plates know that new-season potatoes will shortly be available in all Welsh Asda stores.”

The Pembrokeshire under-12s rugby team, wearing a Puffin-sponsored kit, was handing out promotional material in store throughout the day.

Customers will be able to sample hot Pembrokeshire new potatoes garnished with Welsh butter.

Jenny Liggat, Asda fresh produce buyer, said: “This is always a special time of the year when the British new season kicks in. We are delighted that Pembrokeshire new potatoes are leading the way and that we can shout about just how ‘local’ the produce is.”
