Police plan to use London flower market as strategic base

New Covent Garden Flower Market is to be used as a base for police during the Olympic and Paralympic Games if new plans get the go-ahead from the local council.

For 122 days between 1 June and 30 September, police are hoping to use the site’s basement car park for storage and parking and use the mezzanine office space for logistical purposes.

Wandsworth Council is considering the planning application and comments from the public are being welcomed.

New Covent Garden Market and the surrounding area are to be directly affected by the Games this summer as one lane of the road network that runs past the market is to be closed in place between 7am and 7pm.

Between these times a Games Lane will be in place to help athletes and approved vehicles get across the capital as quickly as possible.

There will also be parking restrictions and changes to signalling due to events taking place in the locality.

The Cycle Road Races will take place on roads in Wandsworth and race routes and some surrounding roads will be closed to traffic.

Full details of the planned changes for each area of the capital are available from the Transport for London website.
