The Potato Council has urged the UK potato industy to address its problems to regain ground after 'the most challenging growing season in history.'

Chairman Allan Stevenson launched the consultation of the Potato Council's 2013-16 business plan at the industry's annual Seed Industry Event.

“Delivering greater sustainability and profitability will be very difficult if we allow ourselves to return to structural over-production in 2013 and beyond,' said Stevenson.

He pinpointed better storage and greater support for seed and processing as key issues the industry must address to return to profitability.

Stevenson concluded: “We have what we believe to be a well balanced and highly focused plan that takes the industry on a journey towards profitability and sustainability. But to succeed we will require everybody to reflect on the previous two seasons and help us identify what needs to change.”
