Stevenson spoke at L'atelier des Chefs in London

Potato Council chairman Allan Stevenson has refuted claims in the national press that the trade body may be shut down as part of the clampdown on quangos.

He told journalists at the unveiling of 10 potato ambassadors on Tuesday that the Potato Council is a “totally privately funded organisation” and part of the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board.

Stevenson said: “We collect £6 million a year in levy payments from growers and their customers; we have no government funding. We are a quango sponsored by our industry, not a government-funded quango about to be scrapped.”
