Retailers healthy actions highlighted

A new report has highlighted the efforts retailers are putting into improving the healthy options for customers, and fresh produce is playing a key role.

The British Retail Consortium has produced the Healthy Options report in a bid to demonstrate to government and decision-makers that the retail sector is tackling the obesity debate and to head-off further legislation or regulation.

Andrew Opie, food policy director with the BRC, told FPJ: “We think we’ve got a good story to tell and we’re not sure people are aware of the work that’s underway.” He highlighted the work retailers have been doing on fresh produce and praised the support of suppliers. “It’s a joint effort from both. Suppliers are working very closely with the retailers.”

He pointed to the efforts retailers have made to promote the 5 A DAY message and how they have adapted the fruit and veg offer: “There’s been a lot of work to ensure fruit and veg meets the needs of newer markets - i.e. how do you deliver it to children to make it more attractive?
