Box delivery scheme Riverford Organic Vegetables is planning to open a chain of “neighbourhood restaurants”, according to the Western Morning News.

The firm’s founder Guy Watson unveiled the “Riverford-goes-to-town” project - whereby a network of small, local restaurants would offer a menu of seasonal dishes, all for under £10 - to the regional newspaper.

Ahead of launching the Riverford Farm Cook Book, Watson told the Western Morning News: “I’ve got a bit of a bee in my bonnet at the moment about doing a ‘Riverford-goes-to-town’ - smaller field kitchens mainly in residential areas in towns. The obvious place to start would be Bristol, I suppose, but try to do them as community social enterprises.”

Riverford already operates a canteen-style restaurant called The Field Kitchen at the farm’s family base in South Devon’s Dart Valley. All the food has to go from field to plate within 24 hours.

Watson now wants to widen that seasonal and fresh dining experience and dispel the notion that organic food is expensive.

The Riverford restaurants would also aim to focus on the community - they would be run by local people and support the area.
