Ronald Marquis, a former president of the Guernsey Committee for Horticulture, has died aged 78.

Harold Dally, a former member of the States of Guernsey, recalled that Marquis served on 15 parliamentary committees, the most important one for him being the Committee for Horticulture.

He had done all he could to lessen problems in which growers found themselves but there was little he could do to slacken the speed of change. However, he was not one to take snap decisions, always giving time to consider proposals, before acting upon them, recalled Dally.

He purchased flower and fruit exporting firm Walter Bird & Son, later selling it to Stan Brouard, a company now run by Rodney Brouard, who also added his tribute to a man with whom he worked closely.

The Bailiff of Guernsey, Sir Geoffrey Roland, described Marquis as a well-known person “who left an indelible impression on all who met him”. FPJ’s condolences go out to all of his friends and family.
