Mayor of London Boris Johnson’s principal food adviser Rosie Boycott opened the inaugural meeting of the London branch of the Women’s Food & Farming Union (WFU) on Tuesday. She told delegates that agriculture in Great Britain could once again satisfy domestic consumption and stop relying on imports.

Other producing countries are being “taken advantage of”, she said, and claimed that consumers have been “sold a story” when it comes to imports providing economic benefits for foreign communities.

Boycott said: “We need a re-think and in a strange way this volcano [in Iceland] could start the food security debate off. Britain can put good food on the public’s plate.”

The meeting saw head of PR and marketing for Rural TV Sarah Chase elected as chair and Savvy Cook UK Ltd founder Monique Borst as vice-chair. The branch will meet once a month.
