Sainsbury's begins organic plum tomato trial

Sainsbury's is conducting a trial of a new organic plum tomato, which will enter its Hedge End store in Hampshire.

The supermarket has been working closely with leading organic tomato grower Wight Salads on a variety known as Golden Plum.

It has been through extensive taste panels and has been selected because of its great flavour and striking appearance.

Sainsbury’s organic buyer Anome Oyetey said: “This is a limited trial but we hope to offer our customers something a little different.”

Oyetey explained that the supermarket wants to show it is eager to work with UK growers. He said: “We are eager to support British organic growers as they seek to develop new varieties and feel this is an excellent tasting plum tomato, with just the right blend of acidity to sweetness ratio, that makes it ideal not only for salads, but also cooked recipes.”

The tomato will be available from May until October and if initial trials are successful, it is hoped it will be grown in larger volumes next year.
