Sainsbury’s has reported a sales increase boosted by cash-strapped shoppers looking for value products in the first three months of the year.

The number-three retailer said sales in the fourth quarter of the financial year at stores open for at least a year rose 2.7 per cent, or 6.2 per cent excluding fuel.

Sales in the 11 weeks to March 21 rose by 3.4 per cent.

Sainsbury’s Basics range of 550 cheaper products saw sales rise by more than 60 per cent.

Chief executive Justin King said: “We’ve delivered a strong performance in the final quarter of the year.”

He added that the better than expected sales growth represented a "resilient" performance from the group.
