Sainsbury's reports strong second quarter

Sainsbury’s has delivered a “good sales performance” in the second quarter of the year.

Total sales for second quarter rose 4.4 per cent excluding fuel while like-for-like sales for period were up 1.9 per cent excluding fuel.

Total sales for first half of the year rose 4.3 per cent excluding fuel while like-for-like sales rose 1.9 per cent over the same period on the same basis.

During the quarter, Sainsbury’s launched its new Live Well For Less strapline and began the launch of its ‘by Sainsbury’s range with 3,000 products in store under the name so far.

Chief executive Justin King said: “'by Sainsbury's' offers customers the same or better quality as the branded equivalent at prices typically at least 20 per cent lower, with no compromise on the values our customers trust…

“Through Live Well For Less we are demonstrating to customers that they need look no further than Sainsbury’s to solve the challenges of their grocery shopping.

"Our general merchandise and clothing businesses continued to grow strongly in the quarter, with sales growth well ahead of the grocery business.”

King also praised the supermarket’s convenience offer. He said: "Reflecting the trend for local shopping, our convenience business continued to grow at 20 per cent, with like-for-like growth ahead of supermarkets. We opened our 400th convenience store, at Wolverhampton.

"This was one of 24 new convenience stores opened in the quarter, bringing the total for the half to 37 and delivering our target of one to two openings per week. We opened four new supermarkets and completed 12 extensions, adding 390,000 square feet of gross new space in the quarter and creating over 1,500 new jobs.”
