Sainsbury's has seen sales growth falter in the last quarter.

Like-for-like sales excluding petrol at the UK's third-biggest grocer eased to 1.1 per cent in the 12 weeks to 12 June, although the retailer reported a "good start" to the year.

The figures match the 1.1 per cent sales growth reported by retail heavyweight Tesco, but sales growth has fallen to its lowest level since 2004.

However, trading is in line with expectations and the retailer said its new stores were performing more strongly than expected.

Sainsbury's remains on track to open 1.45 million sqft in new space in this financial year.
