Waitrose was named best organic supermarket

The Soil Association has honoured producers in its Organic Food Awards at a celebration in central London last week.

Winners were announced in 11 product categories and this year there were also five special awards for “those who put their heart and hard work into organic and social enterprise,” the association said.

The special awards included best school community initiative, best independent retailer, best supermarket and the consumer choice award - in recognition of the breadth and diversity of the organic movement.

Helen Browning, Soil Association chief executive, said: “This year’s… winners prove there is even more to their products than fantastic taste. Organic food producers champion health, and new solutions to the challenge of caring for people, farm animals and wildlife, while feeding an ever-growing population. I am thrilled that there were so many entries this year, reflecting recent research showing an overall return to growth in the organic market.”

Growing Communities won the award in the fruit and vegetable category for its Hackney salad and Riverford was one of four joint winners of the best value award for its carrots.

Waitrose won the best supermarket award and Exeter-based Shillingford Organics won the best box scheme category with a gold award for calabrese in the single-product category. Other single-product category winners were Carey Organic for its organic strawberries and Riverford for its mini cucumbers and baby artichokes and Wight Salads for its organic Piccolo cherry on-the-vine tomatoes.
