Tesco category manager Steve Rudge has left the UK’s largest supermarket after 25 years with the business.

Rudge is hoping to “pursue other opportunities in fresh produce” after departing the retailer earlier this month.

In more than two decades at the company, he worked across the fresh produce range including spells handling potatoes, prepared produce, soft fruit, salads and top fruit in both technical and buying roles. He also had a year working in the dairy department handling cheese.

There are a number of legacies he will leave behind; most notably Rudge was the person responsible for setting up Produce Group Sourcing in Central Europe. Between 2005 and 2010 he was out of the UK business in Europe developing Tesco’s central buying model.

Prior to working for Tesco, Rudge graduated from Writtle College and worked for the department of agriculture and fisheries in Scotland as a fruit inspector for two years.

Rudge told freshinfo: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in Tesco, but it feels like the right time to change direction a little. I believe that the knowledge I have built up could be utilised further, it would be great to mentor and coach some of the new graduates coming into the industry in the same way I was supported when I first set out.”
