Super broccoli flies into M&S stores

Broccoli that is claimed to have twice the average antioxidant power has launched at Marks & Spencer.

Beneforté is the result of cross breeding a wild Sicilian variety found to contain higher levels of plant nutrient glucoraphanin with a common variety.

The “super broccoli” has been developed over the last 15 years and is grown in Boston, Lincolnshire and Fife in Scotland.

Each serving of Beneforté contains two to three times the glucoraphanin as other broccoli varieties. It retails at £1.49 per pack and joins the M&S Simply More range, which also includes Brussels sprouts that are naturally richer in vitamin C and tomatoes, spinach and potatoes that are all enriched with selenium.

M&S agronomist Simon Coupe said: “We understand that health is very important to all our customers so we strive to source varieties of fruit and vegetables that are naturally richer in nutrients. Beneforté broccoli is no exception. It takes a long programme of growing to bring these products to market and we’re proud to be able to be first to launch this product.”

M&S nutritionist Claire Hughes added: “We know that eating 5 A DAY is important for health, but the reality is people are still struggling to achieve it.”
