Tesco takes environmental step

Tesco has announced plans to introduce degradable plastic carrier bags in all its supermarkets.

The bags will self-destruct after a few months leaving nothing but gas, water and a small amount of mineral matter. The store hopes that it makes it easier for shoppers to do their bit for the environment.

Tesco has hailed its initiative as a boost for the environment but the Packaging and Industrials Films Association (PIFA) has profoundly disagreed.

PIFA said that impact on litter would be minimal as the degradation would take months. Also, if the bags broke down into small fragments of plastic, the litter could present a greater risk to animals and birds.
