Thai basil makes retailer debut

R&G Fresh Herbs has started supplying Waitrose with fresh-cut Thai basil.

The Surrey grower and supplier claims to be the first in the UK to have commercial quantities available and that its customer Waitrose will be the first supermarket to offer the herb nationwide.

Cut from mature plants, Thai basil is smaller and more pungent than regular basil and has a spicy flvaour that is a mainstay of Thai and other south-east Asian cuisine.

As a response to growing consumer demand, Waitrose looked to R&G to secure a regular supply, which has been achieved from two growers in the Mediterranean.

Dean Fowler, R&G’s commercial manager, said: “The current Thai basil orders are incredibly buoyant and are now a significant part of our retail and foodservice offering. We’re delighted to be able to offer Thai basil that is ethically sourced, with full traceability and benefiting from LEAF accreditation, promoting environmentally responsible farming.”
