Kelly Bell really loves those Albion strawberries

UK number-one glamour model Kelly Bell has been drafted in to promote Albion strawberries and mark their increased popularity with consumers, retailers and growers.

The variety has been sold by all leading retailers from late May onwards, from both first-year plantings and second year crops. Almost 100 per cent of the crop is Class I fruit, with good yields, excellent flavour, very high sugar levels and great shelf life all major contributing factors

Rupert Hargreaves, director of Hargreaves Plants, said: “Commercial plantings of autumn-planted modules and bare root plants have also been beneficial to fill the July shortage of fruit. This planting method allows the plant to produce a big root volume and initiate flowers pre-winter.”

Up to 30 per cent higher yields and earlier fruit are expected from this system.

The variety was bred at UC Davis California, by Professor Douglas Shaw. Hargreaves Plants has the UK propagation licence for Albion, of which there are seven million plants grown in the UK.

Bell is the face of vegan organisation Viva and has notched up more front page covers than any other model in history in the same publication; 127 in total.
