Waitrose in bloom with new salad add-on range

Waitrose’s salad aisle is in bloom with the launch of a new range of edible flowers aimed at the salad market.

The upmarket retailer’s new Finishing Touches range of salad ingredients features pots of stalkless edible flowers.

The range of salad add-ons, developed with Bakkavör, contains the likes of violas and nasturtiums and hit bagged salad sections on Tuesday.

It is sold under the tagline Your Salad Your Way and is intended for use on top of a bagged salad.

The single-serve pots will be complemented by a range of salad dressings featuring Caesar, French and mango and chilli pots at 40p.

Baby coriander and amaranth leaves, micro purple basil leaves and prepared dressings also feature in the 11-strong range.

The flowers are grown in Evesham and each pack will contain up to 10 heads and cost £1.29 each. They will be available in 204 branches of Waitrose until September.

The launch follows a wave of recent interest in edible flowers. Dandelion and amaranth leaves were recently on the menu at two Michelin-starred restaurants, The Connaught and Hibiscus.

In the past, Roussillon, Tom Aikens and The Dorchester have used flowers as ingredients to mark the Chelsea Flower Show, which takes place on 24-28 May this year.

Waitrose salad buyer Rhonwen Cunningham said: “Violas have a very mild flavour whilst the yellow nasturtiums taste slightly peppery. Edible flowers are not just for decoration, they also have a lovely subtle taste.”
