Waitrose took the prestigious Multiple Retailer of the Year title at the Re:Fresh awards.

The supermarket was praised for actively backing the health benefits of fruit and vegetables and acted on principle to support Caribbean growers by backing the Windward Bananas project.

Waitrose also claims to offer the widest choice of fresh fruit and vegetables on the high street. Last year, for example, the retailer logged no fewer than 126 organic fresh produce lines alone. It also claims to support British growers, sourcing a greater proportion of home-grown fruit and vegetables than any of its competitors. Last year, it offered UK potatoes for 52 weeks and UK cauliflowers for 51 weeks, while for four years’ running all of its strawberries on sale during the UK season were sourced within the UK.
