The NFU has welcomed the announcement that Horticutural Research International facilities and staff at Wellesbourne in Warwickshire and Kirton in Lincolnshire will be placed under the management of the University of Warwick.

Defra Secretary of State Margaret Beckett also outlined a substantial programme of core research funding for what defra described as a specific 'centre of excellence for horticultural research and development in the UK'.

NFU Board for Horticulture chairman Graham Ward and NFU president Sir Ben Gill met with staff at Warwick University today. Ward said: 'While disappointed that Efford in Hampshire is to close, we are extremely pleased that the uncertainty surrounding the future of the sites at Wellesbourne and Kirton is now over.

'We are pleased that these valuable research facilities together with staff will be retained.' The NFU also welcomed confirmation that ongoing projects being carried out at Efford will be transferred to other research and technology facilities, however it did express concern that discussions on the future of East Malling and Wye have still not been resolved.

Ward concluded: 'Horticulture makes a massive contribution to the rural economy and has built an impressive world-wide reputation for its innovation.

'Research and development is vital in maintaining this position. We hope that this change of management will provide HRI with the stability it needs.'
