Welsh schoolchildren are to get their own version of the popular food and farming portal FACE.

Farming and Countryside Education has unveiled www.face-cymru.org.uk as a one-stop online resource to promote the organisation’s work and to bring agriculture closer to the classroom.

The site is set-up to provide a solid portal for teachers, pupils and farmers. It will run independently of the English language site, and focus more closely on regional issues.

FACE national education co-ordinator for Wales, Jane Powell, said that the launch of the site represented an important step in increasing the profile of food and farming within the Welsh curriculum.

“It can be a daunting task for teachers to source accurate information about the industry that kids can understand and to find out the best place to go for on-farm visits and we are determined that the FACE Cymru site will ease that process.”

“There is an online database of Welsh farmers that teachers can access to organise visits for their own school,” she said, adding that pupils could benefit from tailor-made educational resources that explain complex issues clearly and simply, giving them a better understanding about where there food comes from and how it is produced.

“And for farmers, there is clear guidance on how to make school visits to their farms entertaining and informative and also how to access the training that is available.”

FACE says that more information and resources will be added to the website during the coming months to help further strengthen the links between farming and education.
