Williams stands proud

Welsh exhibition vegetable grower Medwyn Williams MBE has won his 11th gold medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, as well as the coveted President’s Award for the second time.

Having won 10 consecutive gold medals at Chelsea, Williams returned to the show after an absence of five years joined by his wife Gwenda, son Alwyn, daughter-in-law Alina and grandson Owain.

He started growing vegetables alongside his father on the Isle of Anglesey at the age of eight and it has always been his dream to stage August and September vegetables in May.

Williams said: “With the help of Scotts Professional products and heated glasshouse space at Bangor University, my dream has become a reality…

“Vegetables are very hungry plants. To grow the best leeks and onions, you need controlled release nutrition. All peat-based growing media start to run out of nutrients after six to seven weeks. Controlled release products are fantastic; I rely on several different formulations of Osmocote Exact depending on the vegetable - supplemented by Peters water-soluble fertilisers for when plants need a particular kick start, or perhaps a high-potash formulation to hasten ripening.”

The Welsh national emblem âà' the leek âà' took centre stage on Wiliams’ stand.
