WS Bentley Growers were triumphant for the second successive year

WS Bentley Growers’ Sprouting Peas won best Fresh Produce Product at the fifth annual deliciouslyorkshire Awards, announced at the ceremony at Rudding Park, Harrogate on Monday.

The judges decided that the product "simply screams freshness" and was "a deserving winner" of the award, sponsored by Stockbridge Technology Centre.

The family-run company grows pesticide-free, traditional salad cress and an award-winning range of sprouting seeds and beans.

Scarborough-based Stuart’s Foods’ Soup To Go, Cream of Tomato and Herbs Unlimited’s Fresh Herb Selection were also nominated.

Jan Bentley from WS Bentley Growers said: “We are very happy to follow up our win in 2008 with another deliciouslyorkshire award. The competition is always very tough and we are always honoured to win. It is a great recognition of our achievement in this sector and the Regional Food Group has been a great supporter of us over the years.”

Hosted by BBC Radio 2’s resident “foodie” Nigel Barden, the awards celebrated products, people and companies from the region. The judging process involved 25 experts judging a record 268 entries, travelling over 550 miles mystery shopping and spending 112 hours judging.

Chief executive Jonathan Knight said: “The standard of entries for the awards gets progressively higher and this year was no exception. It’s very encouraging in the current economic climate to see that more than half of the shortlisted companies are less than two years old.

“With supermarkets increasingly stocking regional products and more consumers saying they want to buy local and know where their food comes from, regional food is on the rise. The Regional Food Group will continue to promote provenance through the campaigning deliciouslyorkshire brand.”
