Israeli company StePac’s Xsense Perishables Quality Monitoring System was nominated for the Fruit Logistica Innovation Award.

“There’s been great interest in the product,” said Dr Gary Ward, director of technology at StePac. “We realised there was a need for better temperature control throughout the supply chain.”

The Xsense system’s innovative aspects come in the form of real-time monitoring and the ability of the system to monitor the temperature of the product itself, as opposed to its surroundings.

“Xsense offers a more accurate representation of the produce temperature rather than the air around it or the truck,” said Ward. “The temperature can be monitored throughout the whole chain, from harvesting to unloading.

“Xsense defines our mission to reduce waste in the supply chain, and it complements our Xtend packaging range.”

The Xsense system enables the continuous measurement of the temperature and relative humidity of perishable fresh produce shipments on an individual pallet basis, through an internet and mobile phone system. The system was launched in May 2009.

Alara Agri Business, a member of the Univeg group, announced at the show that it will begin using the Xsense monitoring system. Implementing this technology will enable Alara to monitor the condition of its cherries and figs as they are transported from the company’s packing facility in Turkey to destinations throughout Europe.
