Young Horticulturist winner named

Kew Gardens’ student Alex Summers was named Young Horticulturist of the Year this month.

The final was held at the National Botanical Garden of Wales on May 9.

Summers, pictured centre, triumphed over his seven fellow competitors, with part-time grower and Writtle College student James Hearsum, pictured right, coming second and Madingley Hall head gardener Faye Steer, pictured left, in third place.

All three had previously worked together at the Cambridge University’s Botanic Garden.

Summers’ prize for coming out top of more than 1,500 entrants in this year’s competition is a £2,000 travel bursary, donated by the Percy Thrower Trust.

He plans to use his winnings to fund a trip into deepest Borneo in order to study parasitic plants.
