Industry eyes China access as it plans to commence exports in the near future

Myanmar’s durian industry has expressed its intention to commence exports in the coming years, with work already underway to secure access to the China market.

According to a report from Xinhua, chairman of the Myanmar Durian Producers and Exporters Association, Kyaw Min, said the industry is preparing to enter the global durian market in 2026 or 2027.

Min told Xinhua industry is already working with the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) on registration processes and efforts to produce both fresh and value-added durian products.

Durian cultivation is expanding in Myanmar, with about 24,281ha nationwide, including over 1,600ha in Yangon, the country’s largest city.

As the industry works towards its export goal, Min said the association hopes to invite foreign investors, experts, and businesspeople to support the development of the industry and value-added durian processing in Myanmar.

Myint Sein, trustee of Ayeyarwady Durian Producers and Exporters Cluster, told Xinhua that Myanmar still lacks large-scale production and processing capacity, but cooperation and new technology could facilitate export growth.

“We have good soil, labor, and raw materials. What we need now is technology, machinery, investment, and strong markets,” Sein said.

“Most of our growers are not wealthy because they cannot yet produce value-added products. Promoting value addition can significantly improve their income and livelihoods.”
