In the competitive world of fresh produce, finding your next high-value market is paramount. The Greater Bay Area isn’t just a market – it’s a doorway to millions of consumers hungry for premium imported goods and Cathay Cargo’s intermodal service is the key.

The Greater Bay Area (GBA) is one of China’s fastest-growing economic zones, home to more than 86mn inhabitants, an economy valued at Rmb14.79 trillion (US$2.09 trillion). Its demographic makeup, combined with its strategic location and robust infrastructure, make the GBA a market ripe for opportunity for global high-quality perishables.

Tapping into this opportunity requires more than just access – it demands speed, reliability, and uncompromising cold chain integrity across borders and modes of transport, all of which can be found with Cathay Cargo.

Cathay Cargo bridges air and road

As an expert in perishable shipments, Cathay Cargo seamlessly connects air and road transport across the Greater Bay Area (GBA), leveraging its Hong Kong home hub and extensive global network. These capabilities are further reinforced by its IATA Center of Excellence for Independent Validators (CEIV) Fresh certification, underscoring internationally recognised standards in handling temperature-sensitive goods.

Cathay Cargo was the first carrier to activate the Air-Land Fresh Lane initiated by the governments of Guangdong and Hong Kong SAR, to facilitate smooth imports of fruit, and live and chilled seafood from Hong Kong into the wider GBA via the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge (HZMB). Shipments move onward by temperature-controlled truck, ensuring product integrity beyond the airport.

The dedicated cold trucks are equipped with accredited e‑locks and GPS, providing enhanced security and visibility throughout the journey. This means easier end‑to‑end tracking from origin to destination, streamlined documentation and a smoother shipping experience overall.

A smarter cold chain — all under a single air waybill

Under the Air‑Land Fresh Lane, fresh produce shipments can now move end‑to‑end under a single air waybill. While single‑air‑waybill movements were previously limited to connecting flights to Guangzhou, it now extends this simplicity to the onward leg by cold truck across the bridge, supported by a refrigerated customs facility in Zhuhai.

An expedited customs process allows eligible shipments to transit through Hong Kong and onward into the Chinese Mainland while remaining in transit. By reducing administrative requirements and accelerating clearance, the service helps lower costs and enables perishable goods to arrive fresher and faster.

Cathay Cargo’s Cathay Fresh solution is a customisable cool-chain product offering the assurance of temperature control from start to finish.

Pain points such as spoilage risk, inconsistent handling, and delays are addressed with fluid connections and the latest technology.

Multi-temperature storage options are backed up by cool room and freezer storage in Cathay Cargo Terminal in Hong Kong. Well trained, experienced staff book optimal routes to reduce fresh shipments times.
