E-commerce fresh food retailing is seeing growth

Google will roadtest its fresh produce and grocery delivery service in the US later this year, news outlet Bloomberg has reported.

The new service, reportedly due to roll out in San Francisco and one other city, steps up the competition with online retailer Amazon and its grocery service AmazonFresh.

Whole Foods Market and Costco will be among Google’s partners for the new venture, general manager of Google Express Brian Elliott told Bloomberg. Google Express already delivers merchandise and dry foods to customers.

He added that the delivery of fruit and vegetables via distribution partners is a move away from making deliveries from warehouses, which adds complexity and requires refrigeration.
