Avocados

With predictions of a bumper avocado crop this year New Zealand may look to send more fruit to Asian markets.

Primor Produce director John Carroll told the Bay of Plenty Times the company, which is the largest exporter of avocados in the country, would need to look at sending more fruit to markets outside Australia and New Zealand.

Last year the company sent over 11 per cent of its export volume to markets beyond New Zealand and Australia, he said, with Japan, Malaysia and South Korea taking most of this fruit.

During the 2010-11 season, the company packed 625,673 export trays, Mr Carroll told the Bay of Plenty Times.

It is predicted crop volumes will continue to grow in the coming years as orchards in the Bay of Plenty and Northland come into maturity.

The CEO of packhouse operator Apata, Steven Low, told the newspaper the company has been investing in a new plant and staff to ensure it can handle the growing volume of fruit.
